The contribution of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights to the modern world is far-reaching. Despite being a “declaration” it has exerted enormous influence on a host of international and national legislations and conventions dealing with human rights. Put simply, the principles within the Universal Declaration require legislators, institutions and individuals to consider the manner which we treat our fellow human beings during war and peacetime. Consequently, human rights have become an important issue in international relations.

This volume contains 15 essays and speeches, most of which were presented at the seminar organised by the United Nations Association of Singapore to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration. The Declaration’s passage of growth and development are examined in a critical manner, without ignoring the tough questions. Among the contributors are United Nations officials, diplomats, academics and social scientists.

This collection is a valuable addition to the literature and debate on human rights; it is relevant for students, researchers and anyone interested in human rights in our increasingly globalised world.
