About the Author

Margaret McDaniels, an American, fell in love with a Chinese from Penang before the Second World War. After graduating at age 20, she married David Leong in New York in 1941 and they moved to Singapore in 1949. In her 14-year sojourn here, she was encouraged by her husband to write and publish her work. Written mainly in the 1950s, Margaret Leong’s sharply observant, lyrical poems address the natural and social world of Singapore-Malaya. The poems collected in The Ice Ball Man and Other Poems are from her previously well-loved published works that have gone out of print.

Synopsis

“This edition of Margaret Leong’s poetry aims at issuing a selection of poems to delight and to instruct—as all art must do—chiefly children from the ages of six to ten, and also readers of all ages who enjoy the pleasures of formal verse and the images of a Singapore island from a past that is still visible in its landscapes, flora, fauna, and multicultural vibrancy.… I was delighted to find poems that pictured the Singapore-Malayan world I lived in, in which the words that threaded the verses actually referenced the everyday objects and mirrored the everyday actions of my life.”
– Shirley Geok-lin Lim, University of California, Santa Barbara

“Leong’s poetry encourages readers to explore a myriad of emotions. She focuses on the everyday and the mundane, elevating such scenes and experiences into the realm of the poetic by effectively capturing a range of shifting nuanced moods from the plaintive to the wondrous.”
– Angelia Poon, National Institute of Education, Singapore

The poems are also accompanied by full colour illustrations by Susanna Goho-Quek.
